Alleppey Houseboat(65 kms) Day – 6 |
Morning check out and proceed to Alleppey. Board the traditional houseboat and start the long and meandering ride through the unique backwaters of Kerala in a thatched roof houseboat. The houseboat is an improvisation of the large country barges, which were an essential part of the land's ethos in days gone by. The kettuvalloms (houseboats) are comfortably furnished with an open lounge, bath attached bedrooms and a kitchenette, and are extremely eco friendly. Every houseboat is manned by a crew - chef, guide and an oarsman. Winding through the vast expanse of the paddy fields(you can stop at any place if you like to take a walk on the fields or see how rice cultivation is done below sea level) and tiny hamlets and palm fringed narrow canals is an unforgettable experience. Enroute you can dine on delicious Kuttanad food at different spots on the Vembanad Lake shore. Grilled lobster, karimeen pollichethu (pearl spot), cream prawn curry, duck specialties or you can buy them enroute the cruise and ask the chef to cook for you. Do not miss on the traditional combination of kappa and fish curry (served on the houseboat), ideally washed down with fresh toddy. This is an exotic brew made from fermented coconut water. Toddy is collected from the trees by experienced tappers either at dawn or dusk (if you are lucky you can see them while you’re passing through the narrow canals on the houseboat). You can also catch your own fish from the backwaters and ask the chef to fry it.
Night in the houseboat. |
